Your Tuesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.
Salem is again home to one of the state’s best reciters of poetry.
Emma Keen, a student at the Oregon School for the Deaf, is among 11 high school students from across Oregon competing Saturday, March 7, at the 2026 Poetry Out Loud competition. The Oregon Arts Commission puts on the annual competition as part of a national program encouraging students to memorize and interpret great poetry.
It will be held at the Grand Theatre, 187 High St. N.E. from 1-4 p.m. and is open to the public.
The Oregon School for the Deaf has a robust poetry recitation program. That requires students to interpret the poem into American Sign Language from English, which is a second language for many students. Salem Reporter covered the program in 2024, when two Oregon School for the Deaf seniors were selected as state finalists.
