Your Thursday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.
But we hope you’ll allow us a minute to break from the pattern.
This week, Salem Reporter received four awards from the Society of Professional Journalists. We took first place in breaking news, investigative reporting and business coverage among small newsrooms in our five state region.
Our work isn’t about winning awards, and we strive to always write for you, our readers, not a panel of judges in another state. But we appreciate the recognition that we’re bringing important local reporting to Salem.
You can read more about the awards in our story below, with links to our winning coverage.

BOBBY’S CHOICES – AN EXCLUSIVE SERIES
In the spring of 2022, downtown Salem was shaken by two shootings. A Salem police effort to later arrest the suspect turned deadly as 16-year-old Bobby Brown fired rounds, believing rival gang members were shooting at him. Police shot and killed the teen, who was close to graduating high school.
As Salem confronts a rise in shootings and youth involvement in violence, Salem Reporter spent months digging into Bobby’s life and the circumstances that left a bright but struggling young man dead on a street in a Salem neighborhood. Our three-part series, Bobby’s Choices, is scheduled to run beginning Monday, June 10.
