Good evening, Salem.

Tonight is the First Friday Art Walk, which will bring live music and artists to businesses in Salem’s downtown from 5-8 p.m. The Elsinore Framing & Fine Art Gallery and Salem on the Edge are among the galleries that will have artists to discuss their newly displayed work. Learn more here.

In other news, parts of State Street will be closed on Saturday, June 8, from 9:30 a.m. to around 7 p.m. for the downtown LGBTQ+ Pride parade and block party.

The stretch between Cottage Street and Commercial Street will be closed until noon, and the section from Commercial Street to Liberty Street will close until 7 p.m. The City of Salem asks drivers to use extra caution, as there will be more pedestrians in the area than usual.

It will be Salem’s first Pride parade in recent memory, and the block party will feature all-free activities including button making, outdoor games, a Lego mosaic and pride performances. Read more about the event and Salem’s LGBTQ+ history here.

BOBBY’S CHOICES – AN EXCLUSIVE SERIES

In the spring of 2022, downtown Salem was shaken by two shootings. A Salem police effort to later arrest the suspect turned deadly as 16-year-old Bobby Brown fired rounds, believing rival gang members were shooting at him. Police shot and killed the teen, who was close to graduating high school.

As Salem confronts a rise in shootings and youth involvement in violence, Salem Reporter spent months digging into Bobby’s life and the circumstances that left a bright but struggling young man dead on a street in a Salem neighborhood. Our three-part series, Bobby’s Choices, is scheduled to run beginning Monday, June 10.
