Good evening, Salem.

Salem’s unemployment rate ticked up slightly in May but remains near historic lows, according to preliminary data released Wednesday from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Unemployment in the Salem Metro Area, which includes Marion and Polk counties, was 3.2% in May, up slightly from a low of 2.9% in April. The April number is the lowest Salem unemployment has been since the pandemic, the agency’s data shows. Salem last recorded an unemployment rate of 2.9% in November 2019.
