Good evening, Salem.

Polk County residents can’t burn anything bigger than a campfire during the Fourth of July week.

Burning will temporarily be banned in the county starting Monday, July 1, with the exception of small recreational fires.

“Please ensure any recreational fires are less than 36 inches in diameter, away from any structures, and you have water on hand,” Polk County Fire District No. 1 said on Facebook.

Officials announced the ban as major fires are already burning elsewhere in Oregon.

The Darlene 3 fire came to life on Tuesday near La Pine in Deschutes County, forcing residents in the area to evacuate. The fire was burning 3,889 acres and 30% contained as of Wednesday afternoon. Crews from the Oregon State Fire Marshal as well as Marion and Linn counties traveled to help.

Farther east, crews Wednesday worked on three wildfires in Malheur County. The Little Valley fire outside of Vale covered about 18,000 acres and the Dry Lake fire near Adrian burned 5,000 acres. Not far from there, crews contained the Board Corral fire, which covered about 250 acres.
