Your Tuesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.
Kroger and Albertsons would sell the Safeway on 3380 Lancaster Dr. N.E., as part of a bid to get approval from antitrust regulators in order to merge, according to reporting from The Oregonian/OregonLive.
The Salem location is one of over 500 nationwide, including 62 in Oregon, that the grocery giants plan to sell if the merger goes through, according to a list released Tuesday. They’ve identified C&S Wholesale Grocers, based in New Hampshire, as the buyer.
The Federal Trade Commission and nine states, including Oregon, filed a lawsuit to prevent the merger, according to The Oregonian article. Government attorneys have argued the deal would significantly reduce competition in prices and employee wages in the grocery industry.
Albertsons owns Safeway and Albertsons locations across the Pacific Northwest, while Kroger is the parent company of Fred Meyer.
The merger case will go to trial on Aug. 26.
