Good evening, Salem.

Pedestrians will get a head start crossing intersections in downtown Salem beginning Monday, July 8.

The city is retiming its crosswalks to give pedestrians a three-second lead to enter crosswalks before the light turns green for vehicle traffic.

The change is intended to make street crossing safer for pedestrians by making them more visible to drivers turning. Federal highway data shows such changes reduce pedestrian-vehicle crashes by about 13%.

The city has already retimed some intersections, including adding pedestrian lead time to the intersection of State and High streets. That came after a turning driver hit and killed longtime civil servant Denise VanDyke in December 2022. VanDyke had the right of way and was in the crosswalk.

Over the coming months, Salem will retime intersections from Division Street to Trade Street, north to south, and from Commercial Street to Cottage Street, west to east. Work will begin starting at Chemeketa Street and moving south, the city said Tuesday.
