Your Monday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

Salem city councilors are talking tonight about whether to pursue new taxes and fees to pay for city operations.

The council will meet at 6 p.m. to discuss recommendations from a city revenue task force that recently wrapped up its work. Councilors won’t make any decisions at the meeting, and several of the options they’re discussing, like a property tax increase, would require voter approval.

The city-appointed revenue task force was charged with finding ways to bring money into Salem as it faces a multi-million dollar gap between its costs and revenue. Task force members worked while incorporating conflicting community feedback.

Our news team will keep you posted as these discussions continue and make sure you’re informed about any future efforts to raise taxes or fees, or cut city services.
