Good evening, Salem.
City leaders are convening a special city council meeting Wednesday to again take up the issue of convicted murderer Kyle Hedquist’s service on the city’s Community Police Review Board.
Such a special meeting is rare, but city leaders said it was warranted in part due to security concerns. Some city councilors who voted to reappoint Hedquist have been receiving threats following a union pressure campaign and national media attention. They include Councilor Mai Vang, who originally made the motion to put Hedquist back on the board – a position he’s held since 2024.
Joe Siess’ story below explains what’s next – and also what the review board does.
