Your Friday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

Salem residents have plans to take to the streets tomorrow in response to federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota.

Protesters will gather at the Capitol again Saturday to show support for Minnesota, which has been the subject of a targeted immigration enforcement operation where federal agents have shot and killed two U.S. citizens. The protest will be from 12-2 p.m. at the intersection of Northeast Center and Summer Streets.

A separate rally organized by Salem’s chapter of Democratic Socialists of America will take place outside of a Hilton hotel in northeast Salem later in the afternoon. Hotel franchises, including Hilton, have been subject to protests and demands for hotels to refuse federal agents rooms. The rally will be from 3-4:40 p.m.

There will also be a bike ride to honor Alex Pretti, the ICU nurse fatally shot by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis last weekend. The ride will start at the base of the soapbox derby track in Bush’s Pasture Park at 11 a.m.

The Salem Police Department usually posts traffic impacts and street closures from protests to the department’s X account. Salem Reporter will also be monitoring the protests throughout Saturday afternoon.
