Good evening, Salem.

The annual Speech Trek Contest is coming up, offering high school girls a chance to win up to $500 cash for a persuasive speech about challenges to education.

This year’s competitors can choose from one of the following prompts:

Western University of Health Sciences Lebanon Oregon

-Who is your unsung hero or heroine of history — a person not currently discussed in history books or classes?

-How might book banning affect your education?

-How will advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) factor into choosing a career?

It’s the seventh annual competition by the American Association of University Women’s Salem Branch, and is open to any high school girl in Marion or Polk County. There will be three cash prizes of $200, $300 and $500.

The competition will be at Chemeketa Community College, Bldg. 60, 4000 Lancaster Dr. N.E. on March 9.

The deadline to apply to compete is Sunday, Feb. 18, at 11:59 p.m. Apply online here.

FREE TICKETS – TOWN HALL ON GUN VIOLENCE

Salem Reporter’s Town Hall on Gun Violence will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at the Elsinore.

The Town Hall planned in January was canceled because of weather. This is free and open to the public but you will need a ticket.

At the Town Hall, experts will share the facts about surging gun violence in the community. This powerful program will pull back the curtains on this safety threat – and share how you can make a difference. This is a place for you as a citizen to help solve a community challenge.

The team at Salem Reporter invites you to join us for an extraordinary evening.
