Good evening, Salem.

The Union Gospel Mission of Salem raised $53,278 during a 50-hour challenge over the weekend where leaders spent 50 hours outside, hosting conversations about homelessness with other service providers and local leaders.

Executive Director Dan Clem and Community Engagement Director Mark Hunter participated.

“This initiative isn’t about replicating the hardships of homelessness but is a radical move to draw attention to this critical challenge in our community,” Hunter said.

The event took place outside ACE Hardware in south Salem and was live-streamed on the Mission’s Facebook page.

“To our guests who contributed to the conversations, thank you for sharing your insights and demonstrating your compassion for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. It truly takes a village, and this past weekend showcased the power of community. We can’t do what we do without you,” the organization wrote on Facebook.

Funds will be used to support UGM services in Salem and Keizer. The organization runs the men’s mission in central Salem, and Simonka Place, a shelter for homeless women and children in Keizer.
