Good evening, Salem.
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered Monday at the Oregon Capitol in a rally in support of immigrants and against the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Organizers and speakers cited the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his work of sustained civil disobedience and peaceful protest during the event, which was held on MLK Day.
The rally was part of a larger Day Without an Immigrant campaign organized by farm worker union PCUN, which is planning monthly rallies to highlight the economic contributions of immigrants.
Reporter Joe Siess talked to attendees about what brought them out, while photographer Laura Tesler captured portraits and signs from the crowd. We’re also following up with Salem police, who confirmed they arrested one person at the event but didn’t provide further details as of this writing.
