Good evening, Salem.
Last month, two of our reporters spent their morning with the city teams working to connect with people living in homeless camps around Salem.
Reporter Madeleine Moore did a ride-along with the Salem Police Department’s Homeless Services Team, while senior reporter Abbey McDonald went with the Salem Outreach and Livability Services, or SOS, team.
The two learned firsthand about each team’s approaches to handling the high-profile issue of addressing homeless camping on public property.
Moore joined the Salem police team as they talked to a six-year resident of Wallace Marine Park, who recently became a grandfather. McDonald watched as the SOS team carefully avoided touching belongings that someone would be coming back for, going out of their way to drive through the mud around them.
After nearly four years in the field, the police team doesn’t believe that arresting people out of homelessness is the way forward, and the cleanup team said treating people’s belongings with patience and respect is key to limiting trauma for homeless people in the community.
That perspective differs toward discussions happening on the federal and local level.
Today, their report on the experience is available below.
