Your Wednesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

Do you have thoughts about Salem’s sidewalks?

Western University of Health Sciences Lebanon Oregon

Maybe your street has a block where you take your life into your hands every time you navigate around a massive crack.

Maybe your street doesn’t have sidewalks at all, and you’re worried about your kids walking to school.

The city of Salem will spend about $17 million in the coming years on projects to improve pedestrian crossings, fix sidewalks and add sidewalks in places that don’t have them. The money comes from the infrastructure bond voters approved in 2022.

You can submit your ideas for what projects the city should tackle until March 31 using a form online here. Those suggestions will be scored based on city criteria like whether a project is near a school, nearby population density and the sidewalk’s condition. The city’s Bond Oversight Steering Committee will develop a draft list of recommended projects.

Here’s some of today’s news. You can always find our latest reports anytime on our website.
