Good evening, Salem.
Some cherry trees around the state Capitol Mall are being replaced this week.
The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is replacing five Akebono cherry trees that are nearing the end of their lifespan, with decline and damage from recent winters. The department staggers tree replacements to maintain the canopy.
The replacement trees are about 8 years old and already 14 feet tall, allowing people to walk under them. They’ll be pruned to support blooming this spring.
“We’re planting the trees during late winter while they are dormant, which gives them the best opportunity to establish strong root systems before spring arrives,” said Kevin Strandberg, the regional operation manager, in a parks department statement. “We expect the new trees to bloom this March and continue to grow and flourish for decades.”
