Good evening, Salem.

A large crowd of students from local schools walked out of class Friday and gathered near the Oregon State Capitol.

The walkout and rally, organized by students in the Salem-Keizer School District and grassroots group Latinos Unidos Siempre, protested increasing federal immigration enforcement and urging the district to support efforts in the Legislature to notify families if immigration agents are on school campuses.

By 12:30 p.m. Friday, hundreds of students were gathered on the north side of the Capitol, waving Mexican flags and holding signs protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Many cars driving along Northeast Court Street honked in support.

Salem Reporter will publish a fuller account of the protest later from our partners at Oregon Capital Chronicle.
