Your Thursday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce has endorsed Mayor Julie Hoy for a second term.
Hoy published a portion of the announcement on her social media accounts Thursday, and Chamber CEO Tom Hoffert shared the full statement with Salem Reporter.
“Mayor Hoy has skillfully navigated and led our city through difficult budgeting processes, in partnership with our city manager, fellow councilors, and the budget committee, to bring the city’s annual budget back into balance. Our organization aligns with Mayor Hoy’s economic policies, her ability to partner with fellow councilors and staff, and her focus on promoting strategic efforts to ensure a safe, clean, and healthy Salem,” the Chamber’s statement said.
Hoy’s husband, Roger Hoy, sits on the Chamber board. The couple owns Geppetto’s Italian Restaurant.
Hoy is seeking a second term against challenger Councilor Vanessa Nordyke in the May 19 election. Despite choosing not to endorse Nordyke, the Chamber statement also praised her leadership as a councilor and noted both candidates were active in the business organization.
“We applaud Councilor Nordyke’s efforts to spearhead exploration of new pilot programs in Salem, many focused on new response models for those experiencing trauma, addiction, and mental health crises,” the statement said. “Councilor Nordyke is a visible and engaged leader, and we remain confident she will utilize her skills and energy to continue to make positive impacts in our
community and local government.”
