Your Thursday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.
The teen was on a neighborhood joyride with friends when bullets came flying.
Matthew Newman, 15, was shot in the head. Police found him dead the next morning in a truck on a Salem street.
The moment police showed up at his mother’s door still haunts her. “I felt like I was in a nightmare,” she said.
The Newman family’s story is part of the growing community concern in Salem over shootings involving teenagers. You can read his mother’s heartbreaking account of her son’s life and death in our story below.
Tonight, we hope you’ll join us for Salem Reporter’s Town Hall on Gun Violence. The free event starts at 6 p.m. at the Elsinore Theatre.
Get tickets online for admission. See more about our speakers and the issues they’ll address HERE.
Finally, a correction. A column we published yesterday about a new outdoor classroom at the Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge had the incorrect date for the ribbon cutting. It will be held March 16. Our apologies for the error.
