Your Tuesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

Salem teachers have now had two mediation sessions with school district leaders as they continue trying to reach a contract. An agreement at the bargaining table would mean Salem won’t see schools closed due to a teacher strike as Portland did earlier this year.

The sessions brought two more pieces of the contract to resolution, with tentative agreements on personal rights and a nondiscrimination statement. Meatier issues, like pay and school safety, remain on the table.

No new pay proposals have been exchanged in mediation, though notes posted Wednesday from union leaders say they’re closer to agreement on an article outlining how schools respond to safety concerns like violent students.

Both sides have agreed to language saying schools will designate someone to respond when educators need help for an emergency or safety situation. The union is seeking to add a procedure for supporting injured employees into the contract.

Educators will again rally outside of tonight’s school board meeting as they seek to build public support amid a contentious period between district leaders and rank-and-file employees during a year of budget cuts.
