Your Thursday evening update on Salem news

Salem Reporter logo

Good evening, Salem.

Our role in city finances is usually just to report the facts.

But Salem Reporter is now helping the city of Salem save thousands of dollars a year with our new public notice service launched Aug. 1.

City officials were so excited about it they wrote a press release Thursday, much to our surprise.

Government bodies are legally required to publish some notices through news organizations. Many charge by the length of the notice. That meant some longer notices cost the city as much as $5,000 to place, the release said. Last year, that meant a $52,000 bill for legal notice publication.

Salem Reporter instead offers a flat fee of $100 per notice, regardless of length, with an optional $20 for an affidavit of publication. All those notices will be posted in our new section here. Anyone can read them, whether they subscribe or not.

We know a few thousand in savings won’t fix the city’s budget woes. But it might be enough to pay for a movie in the park or keep splash pads running for a few days.

Here’s some of today’s news. Read all our latest coverage anytime on our website.
