Good evening, Salem.
Oregon’s experiment with drug decriminalization is coming to an end.
Starting Sept. 1, police will once again be able to arrest and charge people with drug possession. But new state-funded programs are rolling out too that are intended to help steer people toward treatment and keep them out of jail.
In a story today, reporter Madeleine Moore explains how Marion County is handling the transition. Six years ago, the county started a diversion program intended to keep people struggling with homelessness and addiction out of jail and steer them toward help.
Now, they’re expanding with a new court program that will offer people a chance to have charges expunged if they get treatment and complete community service to pay off restitution.

Phones have technically been banned in Salem-Keizer classrooms since a 2022 policy change, though enforcement has varied school to school.
