Your Thursday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

Money to buy new library books, the Eco Earth globe renovation and downtown police were among the issues that came up during Salem’s city budget committee meeting yesterday.

It’s the first gathering since City Manager Krishna Namburi put forward her budget proposal last week. Namburi’s budget is largely status quo, but proposes four new police officers split between a downtown team and a drug-focused unit.

Committee members were largely focused on asking questions and a broad overview of the document and didn’t make any decisions. They’ll keep meeting regularly in the coming weeks to fine-tune Namburi’s proposal before it heads to the city council for a vote.

We’ll keep a close eye on the process and let you know what to expect for your pocketbook and the city services you use.

READERS REACT: “Thank you for sharing the basics of how our city government works. I think that many people do not realize that the mayor and city councilors are volunteers, not high paying political seats. Also, if people want a say in how things work in Salem, they should vote as soon as they get their ballots! Thanks for your good coverage!” -Theresa, commenting on Salem Reporter’s guide to the 2026 city elections.
