Good evening, Salem.

Nearly 100 outstanding educators have been nominated for Crystal Apple awards this year.

Western University of Health Sciences Lebanon Oregon

The annual ceremony recognizes about a dozen teachers, classroom assistants, bus drivers, custodians and others who work to make a difference in students’ lives from schools in Salem and Keizer.

Every year Salem Reporter writes about several nominees to give people a glimpse at some of the hardworking educators in our community. As we work on those pieces, we thought you might enjoy hearing a few snippets from some of the nominations.

“If it was not for everything she did for me throughout the years, I would not have graduated high school or turned my life around,” one student wrote of her school social worker.

One North Salem High School educator wrote of a colleague: “Students would describe her as the reason they come to school, a teacher who can break down barriers and build up students’ confidence in a subject that many of our students struggle with, math. (She) is never seen as the “hard” teacher, even though she teaches the hardest IB math classes.”

“He understands that a clean and well-maintained school is essential for student success and takes great pride in ensuring that our facilities are conducive to learning,” Leslie Middle School employees wrote of their custodian. “Whether it’s proactively addressing maintenance issues or taking the time to interact with students and staff, (he) consistently demonstrates a genuine passion for supporting our school community.”

This year’s award ceremony is May 22 at the Salem Convention Center. Tickets are on sale now for $35. A list of all nominees and past winners is here.
