Your Tuesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.
We’re again sharing information about the Rotary Club of East Salem’s annual book drive, now underway, to support the 12 free libraries it maintains across east Salem. Libraries are located in neighborhoods where a significant number of students read below grade level.
Their libraries are highly-trafficked, going through about 400-500 books monthly, and they’re looking to the Salem community to help them restock.
“While we have signs encouraging children to take a book, read it and return it, we believe the fact that children are keeping the books and likely sharing them with others is a great thing. Our libraries are located in areas of concentrated poverty and near schools and social services agencies, where we know children may not have many books to read at home,” co-chair Catherine Carlson said in an email.
At the Book Bin, you can buy a children’s book from a selection curated by the Rotary Club to donate through Sept. 30. Some titles are in English, and some are dual language to help kids whose first language is Spanish.
People who want to donate children’s books to the cause can email [email protected] to arrange a drop off. People can also donate to support book purchases or learn more about the project at eastsalemrotary.com.
