Local 555 of United Food and Commercial Workers, which represents thousands of employees at Fred Meyer stores in the greater Portland area, announced the strike vote earlier this month.

The union said Kroger, which owns Fred Meyer has violated federal labor law by bargaining in bad faith, a charge the company denied in a statement. The sides are at odds on issues including wages.

Workers at 28 Fred Meyer stores participating in the strike, most in the Portland area, and extending south to Wilsonville and Oregon City locations. The union represents many Salem-area retail and grocery workers under different contracts.

A company spokeswoman said Portland-area Fred Meyer stores remain open despite striking workers. Union leaders are asking shoppers to support the strike by not patronizing striking stores, and visiting other grocers with union workforce like Safeway and Albertsons.
