The Latest Stories For You From Salem Reporter

Good morning, Salem.
High food prices and stretched budgets are coming up against the delay of federal food benefits. Our readers have sent us many questions in recent days, including: “How can I help?”
We’re working on a more thorough guide to publish, but two major organizations will end up filling many of the gaps.
One is Marion Polk Food Share, which supplies the nearly 50 food pantries in the area. The second is local schools – particularly public schools in neighborhoods with many low-income families.
A few schools have food pantries, but all have families in need. All schools can use grocery store gift cards to give out to struggling families, district officials told us. Those let families get perishable items that can be harder to come by and pick out foods that work best for them.
