Good morning, Salem.

We’re seeing a lot of confusion from Salem residents about the future of SNAP and EBT benefits.

Our reporters are working on local coverage, but here are a few things you should know.

First, new benefits won’t be issued Nov. 1 if the federal government remains shut down. That’s because the state of Oregon relies on federal money to run the program. The Oregon Department of Human Services has a Q&A about that here.

Free school meals will continue in the Salem-Keizer School District. All students can receive free breakfast and lunch at school, regardless of income, and no paperwork is needed. Some local schools also have food pantries to help families in need. Your child’s school counselor or community school outreach coordinator can help connect you with resources.

Food pantries in Oregon are bracing for an increase in people seeking help. You can locate free food in Oregon here. Local food pantries are supplied largely by Marion Polk Food Share, which has a list of places to get food here. No proof of citizenship, income or identification is required to get food at a food pantry.

Our reporters are keeping a close eye on any changes or new developments. Let us know what information you’d like to see by emailing Managing Editor Rachel Alexander at [email protected].
