The Salem Public Library has invited the community to bring items to add to its ofrenda that will be on display on the first floor.
Ofrendas are altars decorated with photos of passed loved ones for the Día de los Muertos holiday celebrated in parts of Latin America. They are often decorated with yellow marigolds, candles, tissue paper designs and food and drink.
“The altars are a way for the living family members to honor their loved ones who are no longer here,” the library said in its announcement.
There will be a collection box at the library’s greeter desk at the main branch, 585 Liberty St. S.E. The ofrenda will be on display through Nov. 2.
The library is only accepting artificial flowers as opposed to live ones, and will display LED or unlit candles. Organizers ask that bread and fruit be made of plastic or wax. Items will not be returned.
