There’s pain ahead for local schools, students and educators.

That’s a near certainty for 2026 as the Salem-Keizer School District once again contemplates budget cuts after making deep reductions 2024. District leaders delivered stark news today: they intend to cut at least $25 million to keep ahead of rising personnel costs.

If federal spending reductions and state austerity measures hit the state school fund, that number will be higher.

There’s little known now, and the outlook will become clearer when the state releases its latest revenue forecast on Nov. 19. Union leaders for now are urging employees not to panic.

Superintendent Andrea Castañeda said she wanted to act early to give district leaders ample time to discuss next steps with employees and the community.
