The Latest Stories For You From Salem Reporter

Good morning, Salem.

The Salem Police Department has received reports from people who recently got a phone call from a person pretending to be a police sergeant.

Western University of Health Sciences Lebanon Oregon

The caller gave instructions to meet them at a location to pay outstanding fines from tickets or failure to appear in court.

“This is a scam, the department said in a Facebook post on Monday. “Please do not fall for these unsolicited calls supposedly from a member of law enforcement. If you do not recognize the number, let the call go to voicemail. If you do happen to answer, simply hang up, and do not engage them in conversation or sharing of your personal information.”

Those who believe they do have outstanding fines should contact the Salem Municipal Court to confirm.

“Just know that law enforcement does not call individuals who owe fines, nor would you be contacted to meet up to make a payment. Please share the reminder with family members or friends who may be vulnerable to criminals who can be skilled in gaining confidence, especially on the phone,” the agency said.

Salem police also recently started publishing a log of a selection of calls officers responded to. Many of you said you’d like to see the information in our newsletter, so we’re again publishing the most recent update from Friday, Nov. 24.

These reports come directly from Salem police. They can be found online on the agency’s Nextdoor and Facebook pages. Send any feedback or thoughts to Editor Les Zaitz at [email protected].
