Good morning, Salem.

Councilor Julie Hoy holds a strong lead in the race to be Salem’s next mayor, winning about 56% of the vote in initial counts Tuesday night.

Her bid to unseat Mayor Chris Hoy was the most expensive in recent Salem history, raising nearly $300,000 in campaign contributions. About half of that total came from business and real estate groups.

Thousands of ballots remain to be counted, but Marion County Clerk Bill Burgess said late Tuesday night that the results of the mayoral race are unlikely to change.

Meantime, two city council races are too close to call. Only Ward 1, central Salem, was decisive, with planning commissioner Paul Tigan holding a clear lead over epidemiologist Celine Coleman.
