The announcement was made just after midnight Monday. Managing Editor Rachel Alexander has our initial story.

Meantime, a section of Southeast McGilchrist Street will be closed to traffic starting Monday, April 1, for a city project that plans to improve traffic flow, stormwater drainage and pedestrian and bicycle safety.

The closure will be at the intersection of Southeast McGilchrist Street and Southeast 22nd Street, and the streets and sidewalks within 650 feet of it.

The closure will last through July. There will be designated detours on 12th Street, 25th Street, Madrona Street and Mission Street, but congestion is expected.

The project is part of a larger $51 million McGilchrist Complete Street Project using federal grants and city infrastructure bond money. The $10.4 million intersection upgrades are phase one of three.
