Good morning, Salem.

Many low-income families spend years waiting for help to pay rent.

But getting such help doesn’t guarantee a family stability. That’s the case for Salem mom Misty Blades, who’s been living for months in motels with her daughter and caregiver.

Blades has a coveted Section 8 federal housing voucher that can cover the majority of her rent.

She just can’t find anyone willing to rent her a place to live.

It’s a problem facing dozens of local families, who are often competing against one another for scarce apartments in a market where landlords are reluctant to take a chance on tenants with blemishes on their record – even when payment is guaranteed.

Reporter Abbey McDonald took a deeper look at the challenges families like Blades’ face finding stability. Her report is below.
