Good morning, Salem.

Yesterday, March 10, was the deadline for candidates to file to run for city of Salem elections.

That means our slate of city council and mayoral candidates is set, unless a candidate withdraws before March 13. Mayor Julie Hoy is seeking reelection against Councilor Vanessa Nordyke, and four other current councilors face challengers.

We’ve included our story below with the basics on the race and the candidates. Our team of reporters will kick our election coverage into higher gear now. Our aim, as always, is to give you the information you need to make an informed decision – including explaining the basics of what a city council does. With that goal in mind, much of our work will publish in late April, just as ballots are mailed out to voters.

We’ll seek interviews with everyone running for a city position to explain their positions on key issues, look at voting records for current councilors, and let you know who’s spending money trying to get candidates elected.
