In other news, the Vietnam War Memorial Fund has started construction on Phase 1 of a memorial on the grounds of the Oregon State Capitol, according to a post by organizers.
Organizers held a groundbreaking ceremony in March have been working toward the effort since 2015.
The $3.6 million first phase is nearly fully funded. Recent contributions bring them $384,954 short of the total.
“The Board of Directors decided to move forward with construction rather than wait as construction costs continue to soar. The budget shortfall is minimal in comparison to the overall cost,” Steve Bates, president of the Vietnam Memorial Fund said in a statement. “We have financing available to cover the budget shortfall, but we hope to raise the needed funds and avoid going into debt. We are asking everyone to consider making a donation.”
The project includes a bronze and granite sculpture of a returning soldier and columns showing 790 names of Oregonians killed in action. Construction is expected to finish by October. Donations can be made on the memorial fund’s website.
