The city of Salem has honored 12 graduating seniors for their volunteer work.

The young volunteers helped with the ILEAD Youth Leadership Summit, summer parks programs, the Salem Public Library’s Teen Advisory Board and the Salem Police Cadet Program and more, according to the city.

“The City of Salem’s Teen Action Initiative seeks to empower and equip young community members to volunteer in their community and take on leadership roles to help Salem thrive,” said Mayor Chris Hoy in a statement. “We value youth service and particularly believe in recognizing those who’ve gone above and beyond during their teen years.”

A West Salem High School Senior, Macey Pikl, spent about 120 hours volunteering at Center 50+, including in storm clean-up, delivering food, calling people during Covid and helping out at neighborhood parties.

“What I appreciated most was having the opportunity to exchange new perspectives. I learned many valuable lessons from the shared experiences. What I realize is that everyone has a story to share and life experiences to learn from. I am grateful to have been able to not only help, but also work alongside amazing people,” Pikl said in a city statement.
