The Marion County Housing Authority will open its housing choice voucher waitlist on Monday, July 15, for the first time in several months.

The waitlist will open at 8 a.m. both online and in person at the office, located at 2645 Portland Rd. N.E. Suite 200 in Salem.

Housing choice vouchers are commonly known as “Section 8,” and the federal government pays landlords directly. It’s intended to help low-income families, elderly people and people with disabilities. Read more about how affordable housing works here.

The Marion County Housing Authority does not provide housing assistance within the cities of Salem or Keizer, but does cover the portion east Salem outside city limits. See a map here. It will also open waitlists for housing in Woodburn and Silverton on Monday.

The application deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, according to the website.
