Salem police publish a log of a selection of calls officers responded to. Many of you said you’d like to see the information in our newsletter, so we’re again publishing the most recent update. The department received 1,971 calls from Jan. 1-6.
These reports come directly from Salem police. They can be found online on the agency’s Facebook and Nextdoor pages.
Homicide / 3200 block Portland RD NE
A 29-year-old man was shot and killed in the early morning hours of the new year. The man suspected in the shooting was arrested within days, and a woman was arrested for hindering prosecution.
Homicide suspect arrested / Kinsington ST & Wickshire CT SE
An 18-year-old man was arrested in the shooting death of a 15-year-old Salem boy back in November 2023 in the 1000 block of Evergreen AV NE.
Assault / 400 High ST NE
Patrol officers responded to the mall on the call of a fight between juveniles. A security officer intervened in the altercation and was then assaulted by a 12 and 13-year-old girl and boy. The two fled on foot but were located. The boy was detained without incident. As officers detained the girl, she attempted to pull a metal ice pick from her waistband. Both were transported to the juvenile detention center for assault and disorderly conduct.
Stalking violation / 800 block Whitetail Deer NW
Officers responded to the call of a man violating a stalking order. As an officer approached, he dug his hand into his pocket and yelled for the officer to shoot him. He began to head toward another residence, but stopped after a less-lethal round was deployed. He continued to shout for officers to kill him. A K9 team arrived, and the suspect chose to surrender. The suspect was taken into custody and found to have a cordless house phone in his pocket, not a gun. He was jailed on violation of the order.
Menacing / 4800 block Manning DR NE
Callers reported a man with a hammer screaming and damaging cars and menacing neighbors. He was taken into custody but continued ranting and kicking and banging his head in the cabin of the patrol car until arrival to the jail. He was lodged on menacing and unlawful use of a weapon charges.
Stolen vehicle / 1000 block Lancaster DR NE
During the course of a traffic stop, the male driver could not produce a license or identification. As a second unit arrived, the driver attempted to drive away, but the officer breached the driver door. Officers found the man carried more than a pound of heroin in his pocket and determined he had two outstanding warrants. Jail followed.
Robbery / 1200 block Lancaster DR SE
A business reported an employee was cut with a utility knife after they attempted to stop a man for stealing merchandise. The suspect then ran from the store. Officers conducted a search with a K9 team and a drone. The suspect was located hiding in a shed in a nearby neighborhood. He was arrested and lodged on robbery-related charges. The employee was taken for medical treatment.
Drug overdose / Marion Square Park
Officers and firefighters responded to the report of a man slumped over at a park bench. The man was deceased. The medical examiner was called to the scene. No criminality was determined in the death.
Mail theft / 3800 block Hawthorne AV NE
Three individuals were reported actively stealing items from mailboxes. Two men and one woman were apprehended as they tried to escape through a nearby park with the stolen items in tow. The two men were lodged on charges of felony mail theft and the woman charged with conspiracy to commit mail theft.
Stolen vehicle / 500 block Cottage ST NE
OnStar reported a stolen vehicle and provided officers with a location. As officers arrived in the area, the suspect was seen exiting the vehicle and running away on foot. A K9 officer caught up with the suspect who could not climb over a fence. He surrendered to officers to avoid apprehension by K9 Ghost. He was lodged on multiple charges, including a theft of a motor vehicle.
