Good morning, Salem.

Starting Jan. 2, the main branch of the Salem Public Library will be closed on Sundays and will reduce service hours during the week. The west Salem branch will see even deeper cuts, with open hours reduced from five days a week to two.

The reduced hours come as department leaders attempt to improve staff retention amid looming potential budget cuts. With several unfilled vacancies and an increase in open hours this spring, staff say they often scramble between reshelving books, manning the front desk and other duties.
