Good morning, Salem.
The protest was part of the broader “Day Without an Immigrant” movement spearheaded by Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste, Oregon’s farmworkers union more commonly known as PCUN. The movement encourages immigrants to refrain from shopping or going to work or school once a month as part of a boycott demonstrating the economic impacts of immigrants.
On Thursday, a vocal group gathered on the corner with Mexican and American flags and signs, many in Spanish. One read, “Nosotros somos trabajadores,” or in English, “We are workers.”
People chanted in both English and Spanish, “The people united, will never be divided.”
A few counterprotestors showed up, and despite some verbal altercations, the protest remained relatively peaceful.
