The agency put out tips for the winter season, since frequent use of heating appliances can increase risk.

Regularly clean out vents, chimneys and wood stoves, and don’t use heating or cooking devices, like camp stoves, inside of enclosed spaces, the agency said in a statement.

Also, make sure your wood-burning appliances are vented to the outdoors.

Cleaning out heaters is also an easy way to reduce house fire risk during winter. Other ways to reduce fire risk during colder weather are to plug space heaters directly into a wall rather than an extension cord and to be mindful of overloading your electrical circuits.
