Good morning, Salem.
Reading Results, a nonprofit organization, hires parents, community members and retired educators to work with kids who are behind grade level, but typically not so behind they’d get significant extra help in school.
Tutors are trained in phonics instruction and get ongoing help with lesson planning. Students typically make a year and a half of progress in reading through a year of tutoring.
Now, a Salem school is joining the mix. Highland Elementary is the first to bring in Reading Results, thanks to a larger philanthropic effort to turn the school around. Educators don’t yet have test results for students enrolled, but say they’re seeing promising signs of improvement.
