Hit and run / Portland RD & Pine ST NE

Officers responded to a collision at the intersection with the driver of a stolen vehicle hitting a car exiting a parking lot. The stolen vehicle ran into a nearby building and the occupants fled leaving behind multiple bags containing drugs, drug paraphernalia and an empty gun clip.

Car in a creek / 800 block Ford ST SE

A woman crashed her car into a creek and was able to climb out and ask neighbors for assistance. The vehicle, which was nearly submerged as first responders arrived, was checked for occupants by the fire department dive team and none located.

Death investigation / Lakewood Park

Residents reported a man hung himself in the basketball court of the neighborhood park. The medical examiner responded and found no suspicious circumstances to the death.

Overdose / Marion Parkade

The Community Action Unit officers did an area check of the parkade and found a 48-year-old man who was unresponsive from a drug overdose. Officers administered two doses of naloxone and provided him aid while waiting for medics. The man regained consciousness during transport to the hospital.

High-speed collision / Lancaster DR SE at HW22E off-ramp

A man driving a small SUV at a high rate of speed lost control and struck a street sign, causing the vehicle to roll several times before landing in the nearby grassy area. The driver and male occupant exited uninjured. Both men stated each other was the driver. One of the men was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Also, arrests were made in two incidents posted in previous Shift Commander Reports. The first was the arrest on Tuesday of a man who last week entered a residence and got into a bed and exposed himself to the homeowner. The 29-year-old man was lodged on charges of first-degree burglary and third-degree sex abuse. Then on Thursday, detectives arrested a 41-year-old man who in October stole money from a bar and struck an employee during the robbery. He was jailed on second-degree robbery, second-degree assault, and other charges including several outstanding warrants.

We’d also like to hear from you about the impact of cuts to Salem Public Library hours. Starting Jan. 2, the main branch of the library will be closed Sundays and close earlier in the evening, while the west Salem branch will be open just two days per week.

Let us know if or how the reduced hours will affect you or your family by emailing reporter Abbey McDonald at [email protected]. We may use your responses in a future article.
