Good morning, Salem.
Reporter Madeleine Moore recently spoke with Salem Fire Chief David Gerboth, who reviewed easy and helpful ways people can avoid fire risks as temperatures drop.
If you have a fireplace in your home, remember to thoroughly clean it before firing it up again. Similarly, clean out heaters that have gathered dust in the months they’ve gone unused.
Keep space heaters plugged directly into a wall rather than an extension cord. Gerboth said extension cords are not made to handle the electrical load and responders often see fires caused by space heaters.
Be mindful of overloading your electrical circuits as you keep your home warm. If you’re planning to store your electric bikes and scooters for the season, keep them outside as their batteries can rupture and start large fires.
