Good morning, Salem.

The city’s longtime mayor announced Tuesday that he’ll step down two months before the end of his term.

Chuck Bennett, who has served as Salem’s mayor since 2017 and spent nine years as a city councilor, said he’s moving to Ohio to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren.

That means the Salem City Council will appoint a replacement for Bennett, who announced last fall he wouldn’t seek re-election after his third term was set to expire in January.

Council President Chris Hoy, who won the mayor race in the May primary, said he expects the council will nominate him to fill the seat. Find that story below.

Here’s some local news to start your day off. You can find all of our stories anytime by heading to our website.
