Good morning, Salem.

The Rotary Club of East Salem needs your help getting books in the hands of kids.

The club maintains 11 free libraries across east Salem, in neighborhoods where a significant number of students read below grade level. Their libraries are highly-trafficked, going through about 400-500 books monthly, and they’re looking to the Salem community to help them restock.

At the Book Bin, you can buy a children’s book from a selection curated by the Rotary Club. Some titles are in English, and some are dual language to help kids whose first language is Spanish, said co-chair Catherine Carlson.

The book drive runs through Sept. 30 and aims to get 500 books into libraries. The Book Bin is located at 450 Court St. N.E.

“Our Rotary club is very committed to increasing literacy in our community, and providing books to children is a great way to support that,” Carlson said in an email to Salem Reporter.

We’ve included a story below from last year about the club’s efforts with the free libraries, and we’ll report back about how this year’s drive goes.
