Good morning, Salem.

Tomorrow is Independence Day, and with it comes the annual reminder about fire safety.

At-home fireworks spark thousands of fires per year. The Salem Fire Department recommends keeping a bucket of water nearby to dispose of used fireworks properly. Wait for it to cool at least 15 to 20 minutes then soak in a bucket of water, according to the city’s firework safety page.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal has a list of retailers selling legal fireworks around the state. Fireworks that fly in the air, explode or are unpredictable are illegal across the state. That includes roman candles and sky lanterns.

If you’re looking to let someone else take care of fireworks safety, Salem’s 4th of July Spectacular runs from 3-11 p.m. at the Oregon State Fairgrounds, 2330 17th St. N.E. Check out our weekend events lineup for more information.

Temperatures are expected to reach nearly 100 degrees tomorrow, according to the National Weather Service, so make sure to take breaks in the shade and stay hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
