If you look under the stairs on the main floor in the Salem Public Library, you’ll see an old card catalog given new life.

Inside it are seeds, free to take and plant at home.

It’s the latest project from the library’s Teen Advisory Board, who have packaged vegetables, fruit and herb seeds to share with the community. There’s also box to donate unused, commercially-packaged seeds.

The group hopes to to grow the pilot project further, according to the library’s Facebook page.

Here are some of our latest reports. You can find more on our website.

Try Salem Reporter’s Obituary Service

Our digital obituary service is now available to anyone. It’s easy to use, more generous with space and photos than most, and priced to be affordable.

We have guidelines and an online form to use, but here are the basics:

*Obituary text has no limit (but no book-length submissions, please).

*Up to five photos can be loaded to share – not just one.

*Obituaries first appear in our obituary section, then in a summary of the week’s obituaries. That summary then appears on our Facebook and Twitter channels.

*The price is a flat $100.

Go HERE to use the submission form.

We invite your news tips and story ideas

Sometimes the best stories we produce result from a question or suggestion from a reader. We count on local people alerting us to what’s happening. After all, Salem’s a big city and we have an ambitious but small crew.

The best way to get us your tips is to reach out directly to one of our ace reporters:

Ardeshir Tabrizian – [email protected] (criminal justice, housing, homelessness)

Abbey McDonald – [email protected] (city issues, transportation, community news, health care)

Or just drop us a note by email at [email protected].

Help fund our summer journalism intern

Salem Reporter has been selected to participate in a prestigious internship program by the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication. We will host a reporting student this summer. The internship covers some but not all costs. Please help us fund our share with your contribution today by clicking HERE. Thank you for helping us restore integrity and fairness to journalism.
