Starting in October, high schoolers will need a pass to continue riding Cherriots buses for free.

Cherriots rolled out the Youth Zero Pass program in 2022, making bus rides free to anyone under 18. Now, the transit agency wants to verify ages to crack down on people lying about how old they are, said Patricia Feeney, Cherriots spokeswoman. That means teens age 14-18 will need a pass to ride free.

Students enrolled in the Salem-Keizer School District will get a pass automatically as a scannable QR code on their school ID.

No pass is needed for youth 13 and under to ride.
